New ash cloud sparks re-routing: Eurocontrol

Renewed and more intensive volcanic ash eruptions in Iceland took place on Thursday night, resulting in a re-routing of some transatlantic flights and potential delays, European air traffic agency Eurocontrol said.

The area of potential higher ash contamination is forecast to extend from Iceland as far south as the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula on Friday, Eurocontrol said.

There are areas of predicted ash up to 35,000 feet while in recent days, the maximum altitude had been 20,000 feet, it added.

Some airports had been closed in the west of Ireland on Thursday night but were now re-opening, Eurocontrol said.
